Car Seat for One, Please!
A very important decision that a parent has to make is which car seat to install in their car. The right car seat has to fit your car, fit your child and be one that you’re comfortable installing yourself.
Since all car seats have to pass standard crash tests and safety standards, it’s important to note that more expensive does not necessarily equal better or safer. In these more expensive cases, they could be made of more expensive materials or just have more added features. Before choosing a car seat, stop and read the labels. Does this particular style fit your child in weight and height? In order to fit properly, your child must be within the limits of the seat.
Next, test it out if you can. A lot of stores will allow new parents to test the car seat in a car to make sure it will fit, and that it’s easy enough to install. After you’ve decided on the exact car seat you’re interested in, there’s still work to be done before purchase! Scour the internet for any recalls and follow up on the ones you find. Is there an expiration date? Yes, these exist for car seats. Check the seat itself for any cracks if possible and make sure you don’t need to purchase any additional parts.
Your child should be able to sit with his or her lower back against the seat and keep their knees bent at the edge of the seat. Shoulder belts should cross your child at mid-shoulder and mid-chest.
