Halloween Safety Tips
Spooky season is upon us and while scary movies can cause anxiety and fear, Halloween is potentially most scary for first time parents who just want to keep their kiddos safe. October 31 is fun and exciting, especially if it’s your first time taking your toddler trick-or-treating.
Other than peanut butter covered in chocolate and nougat, safety should be at the top of your mind. As much fun as Halloween can be, you want to make sure that you’re keeping your child out of harm’s way.
First and foremost, beware of masks that make it hard for your little one to see – tripping and falling is a real concern because kids often try to skip or run to the next house. If you opt for face paint of some kind (instead of a mask), consider using a hypoallergenic and non-toxic paint option to alleviate any kind of potential reactions. And remember, once you’re retired for the evening and the fun is over, wash all that make-up off to once again eliminate the potential for any irritation.
When it comes to costumes, keep in mind it can get hot, especially in the south – look for a costume that uses a lighter weight material so overheating doesn’t become a problem. We all know toddlers can get cranky when they start to get a little too hot. Aside from material, make sure the costume fits and that there’s nothing hanging that your child, or someone else, can trip over. Pro-tip for parents: add some reflective tape to the back of your costumes so others can see you in the dark!
Ok, let’s talk about candy. Anything opened goes in the trash. Make sure once you and your toddler get home that you inspect ALL of the candy collected to ensure there’s nothing sharp, or suspicious before digging in.
Of course, the number one rule about trick-or-treating with your little one is to HAVE SO MUCH FUN.
Seeing Halloween and trick-or-treating through the eyes of your little one for the first time is so rewarding and memorable for everyone involved. Stick together, hold hands, carry a flashlight and have a boo-tiful time!
