Stressors for Your Toddler
Life is pretty tough these days, especially when you’re under two feet tall and aren’t 100% sure how to communicate. Yes, it’s true – your toddler does have stressors. Life is more than just lollipops and toys and they’re learning it all for the first time. That’s rough stuff.
You may not realize it, but your toddler’s day-to-day life is jam packed with things that can completely stress them out. Take note of our list and consider some of the ways you can make your toddler’s life just a little less stressful…
YOUR MOOD
You may not realize it but your toddler tunes in to everything! Keep that in mind the next time you have a heated debate with someone, or the next time you get frustrated. Your child might not understand what you’re saying, but they can surely decipher your tone and volume.
SEPARATION
Throughout the week your child goes through a series of drop-offs and pickups that can be overwhelming. Whether you have to go to work for eight hours or are going to run errands for a bit the separation can be hard to handle. This type of anxiety tends to peak around one-year-old to one-and-a-half-years old. It’s super helpful to leave your toddler with a familiar face and make sure you remind them you’ll be back.
SCARY STORIES
You might not allow your toddler to watch scary movies, but that doesn’t mean there won’t be things that scare them. Anything and everything has the potential to be scary. Some things that might not even be at all frightening can terrify them. The only thing can you really do is be careful what you expose your children to and comfort and talk to them when they get scared. Work through their feelings!
USING THE POTTY
First time potty use is overwhelming to say the least. There’s a lot of pressure on your toddler! Some parents make the mistake of expecting too much from their child during the potty training process. Be careful NOT to overreact. If you’re sensing frustration or anxiety you may want to consider laying off for a bit until they seem ready.
