Summer Fun On a Budget

Summer Camp is done, but school doesn't start for a couple weeks. Now what!? More than likely, you're hearing the dreaded "I'm bored!" We’ve put together some fun, budget-friendly summer activities that you can enjoy with your kids.

  1. Bike Parade: Round up the neighborhood kids and discuss how they'd like to decorate their bikes for the bike parade. You can use streamers, stickers, flags and more! Then let them cruise down the street in style while parents applaud.
  2. Obstacle Courses: Create a back yard obstacle course using anything you have on hand like hoola hoops, jump ropes, pool noodles, cones and anything else you may have laying around.
  3. Online Crafts: There are lots of online resources that can help nurture your little one's creativity. Many of them are free and include detailed how-to instructions. Just do an online search for whatever type of craft you're interested in.
  4. Visit a Wildlife Sanctuary or Nature Preserve: Depending on your location, your town or city may have a wild life sanctuary or nature preserve that you can visit to teach your kids about flora and fauna. An online search will reveal local options for you.
  5. Story Time: Barnes & Noble, and many libraries and independent book stores host story hours for kids. You can find schedules and other information at bn.com, or by contacting your local library or bookstore.
  6. Thank Local Heroes: take your kids on a tour of the local police station or fire station. Many locations don't have established visiting hours, so call ahead to make an appointment. It's a great learning experience for children.
  7. Family Movie Night: Get the popcorn ready and let your kid(s) pick out a movie for family movie night.
  8. Culinary Lessons: Pull a stool up to the kitchen counter and teach your kids how to make one of their favorite treats or snacks.
  9. Visit Local Museums: Many museums offer free admission days or discounted rates for children. Do a search for local museums who offer reduced pricing and enjoy a day out of the house with your kids!
